New Cars>> Sti’s Ft86

We all know that Toyota teamed up with Subaru on its latest FT86 concept Jeroen posted about last week, but it looks like the rumored Subaru STi version of the car may be the one to wait for. According to Autoblog, where I found this image, the STi version of the car might be ready for the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show and pack a 250 HP EJ25 along with a rear-wheel-drive layout. I wonder if a turbocharged 300+ HP STi AWD variant may be on the cards too?

I see a hint of the GTR in that concept but it looks like something that will be very impresive, a clear change from the subaru style!

2

i hope they keep this rwd. OMG...

3

the wheels look like it came off a Lan. Evo 8-9 MR; and yea tech is right the rear end look like a 35, or 350/70z style..

4

I think it looks like a Toyota Land Cruiser, shame on you Subaru!......*sigh*

5

God, what's with thess damn mini GTR's. DO NOT WANT.

6

I don't know how correct this is. Anybody with propper drawing skills can create a picture like this. i mean I could draw it myself. Also, a rear wheel drive Subaru? Is it me or does that sound wrong or weird? In the last 20 years, how many non-AWD special production vehicles have you seen Subaru produce? Just doesn't add up if you ask me.

Oh and I'd much rather Toyota keep this vehicle design, scrap the flat4 idea, and build something more legitimately Toyota. I mean its neat seeing Toyota and Subaru trying to come togeather to build a vehicle but they're competing companies. For other car companies It would be like seeing BMW teaming with Audi. For another type of companies, its like seeing McDonalds and Burger King (Or one of McDonalds many other cometitors) coming togeather to make a special burger of sorts. Sounds neat but it doesn't usually work, if it does work then it doesn't last long. Good luck to Toyota and Subaru or just to Toyota or just to Subaru (who ever gets to label the car) on producing the vehicle.

7

I like it, but not in blue.

8

mini GTR or Z imho,

But I buy IT!

9

RWD? Interesting, but it'd be even more interesting in AWD, especially from Subaru.

10

There are enough awd cars out there already. This needs to stay rwd there is no reason at all this should go awd. Its going by 86 name so why mess with the classic rwd that originally came with the name.

11

I like the idea of it becoming the 86 for our generation however i cant get away from it being the poor mans GTR. Also, i hope its got a bit more BHP than the 148 that many people are suggesting. With all that said, if it comes in under the £15k mark i'll probably have one!

12

Personally my plan always has been to dump an ej25 in, heres hoping they keep the engine the same externally!

13

STI + Coupe + AWD + Turbo = I'M IN!

14

If this bad boys comes out and has all around great performance to back it up.... RWD+EJ25 (or higher hp variant of) + 25-28k (USD) sticker price = Hyundai's(Genesis), Nissans (370Z), Ford (Mustang), GM's (Camero) Nightmare.

I would buy one now if it was available. Mainly for the reason I cannot afford a well sorted 370Z or Camero SS. I am not a fan of the looks of the Genesis coupe, and would not own a mustang (especially with a solid rear axle)

15

Hey a GTR! 4 or R i'd pick it up but R does sounds weird for subaru.

16

yeah so.. doo waaant

17

Looks like some high school kid drew it, can someone tell me why Toyota and Subaru decided to have a baby?............Concepts are just that concepts, the real thing never measures up, Toyota should do their own thing, produce a nice 25G RWD free revving coupe and stop with all the 86 nonsense, its the Mitsubishi Starion, Plymouth Conquest thing all over again, If i want a nice Flat4, i'll buy an Impreza!!

18

R35 with a subaru badge?

19

if this is the successor of the AE86 or was supposed to be as stated in the last post,,,, why is it made by subaru, i know it has a subaru engine but still, and why AWD screw that we have enough awd cars we need more RWD... So can they already make up their minds before this thing gets completly F***ed up and becomes a FWD ,diesel, sedan .....

20

Some you should maybe actually read the original article posted by 7Tune.com

It answers a lot of you're 'misconceptions'.

22

@ Roger Bent

You should be able to see that this is a very-close-to-production concept. Probably all that will change would be the headlights and the crazy interior (Although it looks great!).

23

WOW so many haters on Subaru making a RWD car! wtf, guys, this is a way for Subaru to keep the price DOWN LOW to hit the market share they lost by making the STI into a $40,000 car! I'm all for this and having an '04 STI, there are some good points to having something like that motor and 6speed in a rwd 2+2 coupe for a low price! BRING IT ON SUBARU, bring it ON!

24

I'm happy for any variant to be produced.

25

they should atleast give it a facelift so that they wont look too identical. the flares add up a nice touch.

If this comes out at 300hp then the toyota variant may likely be the eco-ish version of this car. it will be out-shun straight by this version.

26

The standard platform engine isn't EJ-series... at least according to Toyota its called a C-45.

And for those blaming Subaru for ANY fault in the s**tiness of the ideas arising for this platform, you have to remember Toyota owns 80-85% of Fuji Heavy

27

Needs to be RWD, those cars are disappearing too fast IMO. Then, personally, I think the lines are a bit too aggressive for a car that's producing low-ish numbers. (I suppose if the HP matches the weight well, that won't be an issue, but if it's GTR-esque, it can come out fairly heavy.) I just don't like the lines of cars anymore.... Viva la original AE86 and her glorious boxy-ness. :)

28

if you guys would have googled the name of the car you would know that it is a colaboration with toyota and is going to actually be releised in 2011 under the toyota badge. boxter 2.0 flat 4 and toyota direct ignition ems. some times i wonder abuot you guys... (shaking head )

29

hmmm Toyota price and then a few years later engine swap when the engine price goes down. its all good! lolz

http://img232.imageshack.us/i/j3s9888cu9.jpg/#q=r35%20gtr

well, lets see, the rear arches are different, similar but still different, the front arches are also different, 3 body lines along the side versus the GTR 2, the headlights are also very differently oriented. i see where you get the rear roof line looks similar to the GTR, but there are many cars that have a coupe style roof line like that. if anything it looks a lot more like a smaller version of the lexus LF-A. sure its a concept, but please, it doesnt look anything like a GTR. and, its not like this is the first collaboration car of all time people, every car manufacturer has done it! jeez.

31

it looks.... like a drawing anyone could have made.

FT86 @ 200 HP with a Toyota badge... CONFIRMED

FT86 "STI" @ ??? HP... PURE SPECULATION (As someone drawing a picture of it with colored pencils would imply)

32

its a GT-R jaja but with other front view, needs more work on the visual part

33

Personally, I would've liked the car better with a collaboration between toyota and Mitsubishi. This car with a Mitsubishi 4B11 and a Toyota 6speed with RWD would make this car completely worth it (even if it does look like a premature 370z). If Mitsubishi labels it, it can be called a Starion and if Toyota labels it then it can be called a Trueno/Levin/AE86 etc... Its not that I don't like Subaru, I just think that if its going to be a Subaru then it needs to be AWD (because in my opinion thats what they're best at) and I'd much rather it RWD. I also just think its funny seeing Toyota and Subaru come togeather and the outcome/vehicle ends up RWD and with a flat four. Doesn't that seem backwords? I would've expected it to be a Subaru AWD with a Toyota four cylinder or six cylinder. I'm not saying that Toyota builds the best powerplants (besides the 2JZ,ofcourse) and I'm also not saying that a Subaru flat four is garbage and powerless but more less efficient for this vehicle's design. Lets put it this way... People aren't going to buy the car for a Subaru four cylinder thats hard to work on and that gets terrible mpg (well besides the Impreza's). When it came down to Toyota and Subaru, I thaught that it would be neat and would've obviously had a Toyota power source and a Subaru drivetrain but instead its backwords. When Audi took over Lamborghini they didn't scrap the Lamborghini engine (the best part of the vehicle in point of view) and add a Audi motor and leave the Lamborghini RWD transmission. Instead they did what they do best and thats add a AWD system and left Lamborghini's V12's and V10's in the vehicles. I don't know, I already ignore the GTR because I think the hype is way too big for what came out so I'll probably ignore this vehicle too (thats if it makes it to production successfully). Oh and I'm sorry for the "essay" type of comment. I had something to say and I wanted to get it off my chest.

34

This is such a disgrace to the rally roots that the car comes from, and the reason we all grew to love the STI. This isn't a Subaru, not to me, and not to any true Subaru fanatic.

35

The look of it isn't too bad.. yeah i agree with what robbyturboamg said. it seem kinda awkward. I hope the STI trim will come with more hp and awd would be cool.

36

Looks too much like a GTR. Cant subuaru come up with their own design and styling without copying anyone else...

37

I think its Subaru trying to enter more into the GT500.. or something of that nature. Maybe this is them pulling out of rallying circles? they have had there time in the sun and now they could be aiming to do what toyota and nissan did in the late 90's and compete with the likes of porsche and ferrari and even (as many in this have likened it to) the GTR

38

LoL, Subie fan boys are funny. First thing first. Toyota posses a 17% stake in Subaru. So instead of being a douche and making a RWD scion and calling it a sports car. They decided to jointly make a car that is fun to drive and responsibly priced. They took an already established motor, tweaked it with some Toyota ingenuity and placed it in a small, light weight chassis "The FT86 is roughly the size of an S2000 with a longer wheel base." If you are a TRUE car enthusiast these two cars should make you very excited, especially if you have been waiting for Toyota to regain their spirit.

39

Subaru and Toyota have been working together while most of you were still in pre-school they have both been making Kei-Cars together for countless years this was a step that everyone could see coming.

Subaru in Japan are in hard times right now and Toyota being the strongest car company in Japan will really help Subaru get back into the game and start making some cash and selling some car.

Not a huge fan of the look but its good for the company.

40

to clear up the AWD vs. RWD issue, i think they should make it 40% front, 60% rear, so you can have good control but still have the ability to kick the tail out. I like it..... a great improvement on the current WRX/STi

41

Jelopy, are you high? Obviously it's not exactly the same but it looks A LOT like a GTR, just way smaller.

http://cabaynes.com/files/overlay%20gtr.jpg

42

fck this. im going to draw a concept car. Mitsubishi Evo engine + AWD + Mivec + Nissan s14K??? LOL the baby to the all mighty Silvias

43

Wow.. cool design..

I like blue..

44

it looks lik f*ckin 350z :(

45

wow, some of you guys will never be happy. toyota and subaru get together to produce an affordable light weight rear wheel drive coupe, and you complain. im not sure if you are aware, but the market for light weight rear wheel drive cars isn't exactly flourishing. at the very least you should enjoy the fact that its not linked up to a hybrid drive train and a gross 3800 lb curb weight. hopefully this will inspire other companies to fire back.

46

hmm mack, its a fucking coupe. coupes have similar side profiles. theyre coupes. thats like saying a hatchback looks like another hatchback. details. look at the details not general shapes.

47

I don't know how anyone missed this- everyone's comparing it to the Nissan's, but (the Toyota version especially) I think it could be a replacement for the aging Scion TC. Look at the windows. The Toyota version, to me, is a RWD TC, updated with Lexus LF-A styling cues. Yes, I do see a bit of R35, but that's because the R35 looks like nearly every Japanese coupe. I don't think it looks that bad, and if they price it below 20 grand, I'd take one. I can't think of any RWD coupe sold in the US for that price except the Smart, and that obviously is not in the same league.

48

To keep you up guys up to date. Toyota actually own a large portion of shares in Fuji heavy Industries (AKA Subaru). Which will explain the reason for the joint design venture with this future product(s). FT86 and then this. The car is never meant to be a GTR competitor but these are designed to fit into a category which Toyota and possibly Subaru don't have a car to cater for which is a cheap small sports car and it looks like that the main focus is also light weight as per the feedbacks that they have been getting. Still again things can change and we just have to wait and see what happens.

Either way it is good to see more sports cars being released to make the market more interesting again.

49

Wow, how did so many ignorant kids end up on Speedhunters?!

1. This is the single best thing to come from Toyota in years... Complain hard enough, and it just might not happen.

2. Whining and moaning WON'T get you a better version.

3. Your'e only a 'branding expert' in your own mind- nobody will hire you to direct the Subaru brand.

Seriously folks! How could you not support a lightweight, reliable, small coupe from Japan!!!! We already have 4wd, but nothing to drift with!

50

its ok but i think its a litle bit looks like nissan gt-r

51

hmm.. I was looking foward to this as a public car too because I thought it was gonna be the next scion tC.. I looked into it more, and I was interested in it... I cant seem to think that it would be a good subaru style car.. I looked into it more as a toyota.. I also compared the styles to the venza... since the venza is a crossover with three different type of toyota cars, I looked as it as a venza coupe or something.. its whatever though.. Im hoping to see more out of it.. bad ass interior too.. the sensitive touch leather is a pretty good feature for a concept type of car..

Indeed! Isn't it 20%?

53

There are versions of non-AWD Subaru cars currently on sale in Europe and Asia... Google it. Subaru being "AWD only" is a Subaru Of America (SOA) theme... Judging from the low slung hood height and wheelbase of the chassis (at least from an FT86 standpoint - don't know if Subaru will look the same or use a totally different chassis)... There is no room for AWD (otherwise, the front overhang would be longer, and the front wheels would need to be behind the engine instead of being parallel to it)... There also seems to be no room for a Top Mount Intercooler... Maybe the Subaru 086A version will finally have a front mounted one and used a repositioned Turbo placement like the new Legacy... I'm sure it will be a great car regardless of whether it is Turbocharged/AWD/NA/RWD....
