Need For Speed Shift>> Demo Release And Update Information

I know some of you wanted to find out information about what technical issues with the game are being dealt with by the Need for Speed SHIFT production team. I've been given this link here which shows the main issues that are currently being worked on. I hope that helps!

Vaughn Gittin JR is also working on a tutorial for the drift mode which he's going to post here early next week. He told me today that some people within his drifting crowd are starting to get the hang of the mode which is great news. But I'll let him talk to you about that directly.

In the meantime I wanted to show you this bolted on overfender that SMS modelled so nicely on the S13!

I also never got a chance to show you this "ode to Matt Powers" S14 that I did up a few weeks ago.

BTW If any of you want to try out Need for Speed SHIFT for yourself, you can download the free demo for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 as of today. You can sample 5 cars: a Lotus Elise, Nissan GT-R, Dodge Viper, BMW M3 and the Pagani Zonda R (once you've unlocked it) on two tracks: London River and Spa-Francorchamps.

Make sure to drive in the cockpit view for the full experience and turn off all the driver aides to get the full effect!

Ebisu south is in the game, but not as a drift track. Fix this..

2

Good to see a response. I think its great you have so many real-life bodykits in the game.

3

Screenshots look awesome! I love this game.

5

Love the game! Weird thing is I have noticed ZERO lag online but in career mode the cars sometimes lag or "stutter". People should give this game a try. Forza is a great game but NFS is a lot funner in my opinion plus it has a drifting mode!

6

hmm how come i dint get this bodykit of Nissan R35 in my PS3 NFS shift??

7

This game kicks so much ass. I've encountered a few of the bugs other people mention and its a bit frustrating at times, but the good parts of it outweigh any bugs for me. It's clear how much effort was put into it from the start and even the first update seems to have fixed a few of my own issues. It's nice to see that EA's dev team is being very communicative and open about the patching process, pretty refreshing.

Get this game. Get a G25. Then clear your calendar. :D

8

That's not a body kit on the R35 GTR, it's the Works converted GTR, whole other level of carbon-spooge.

9

Ive already played this game? im in new zealand? I found it (to be honest) Sh it.... drifting is too difficult unlike GRID and racing is boring.. music sucks too.. is this the same NFS Shift?

10

The game is great, but one problem you should probably fix is the fact that certain rear drive cars cannot be drifted. I know this is not a bug, but its really stupid that you can only drift certain rear drive cars. I was disappointed when I could not drift the Mx5, the Camaro, the Challenger or the Corvette. There are too many Japanese cars in a ratio to American ones. If you could change this, it would be much appreciated. The feel of the game is great though. Cheers!

11

Aycy, that's the Works conversion I'm pretty sure. You have to have installed every single upgrade from Level I to III and all the race parts, and all the body parts (just need one bodykit, so I always just get the cheapest one and keep it)

12

I love this game!

13

Will this game be available for PC as well and in that case does anyone know what the system requirements will be?

14

Great game, its ruined my social life and my girlfriends pretty much given up hope with me. still though, gotta get my driving practice in seen this:- http://www.facebook.com/UKTraitors?v=app_133119152838#/UKTraitors hmmm spending my days playing on a console might just pay off!

15

Had it a couples a day ago :)

The DRIFT mode is awesome and so easy to get killer good at :)

I just wonder how you totally forget about the SUPRA? :O WTF, that's a icon car :)

But I love the game, but I'm also getting a bit tired of it becuse it's soooo easy..

16

Still not a sim... didn't last 10 minutes in my computer

17

I was hugel looking forward to shift, and the early sections of the game are great. Once the cars get faster however the handling seems to be unable to cope. Tweaking some controller settings helped but eventually I got tired with cars doing nothing but wildly understeering and oversteering. Customisation is great, and the car models look and sound fantastic. It's just a shame that races rarely feel satisfying because you've spent most if it fighting with the physics. All that said, it's a huge step in the right direction for the series and after what felt like hours of practice your first sucessful drift even is hugely satisfying!

18

The drifting is no problem once you adjust the handling settings of the game and the setup of the car. Things like graphical glitches (flag girl appearing in the middle of the car) and audio glitches (start a quick drift game up for example and there no audio whatsoever until you restart) are annoying and shouldn't have been allowed to have been included in the final game. I know its not just me because I know other people are having the same issues. The customisation of the cars could really do with extra detail as well, applying vinyls is a nightmare and you can't colour the wheels or the brake calipers?!

19

nr1forme, Its already out on PC, I think, since they're already building patches....

20

@Jono9981 "I'm fighting with the physics"

That would be the step towards sim. It really helps to Reset tuning to default after the Works conversion and tune from there. Also remember not just in drifting but racing, coming out of turns at WOT can result in traction loss.

21

ehm...they should eliminate that stupid steering lag instead...

22

I absolutely agree with Mikee87

23

The driving and drifting in this game are GREAT. Not a sim by any means, but SO much fun. I have never liked in car views, but it is so intense and fun in this game. Drifting in car seriously reminds me of doing it for real. It is difficult to pick up, but as soon as you use some finese and don't just mash on the gash and ebrake, it becomes addicting real fast.

The glitches in this game are unforgivable though. No fit and finish what so ever. No engine noise on quick drift games (until restart), graphical aliasing that looks like its from '95. And so many body parts (headlights especially) just look like a sticker with no depth or realism. Also realized that the reply camera sometimes does not switch automatically which left me a camera staring at a wall but "following" my car haha.

I still stayed up all night last night playing...but I wonder why EA coulda had a GREAT overall game, and all they released was a GREAT driving game with sub par finish/glitches. I will continue to play this game for hours on end because in the end the driving experience is a ton of fun.

24

I just downloaded the demo for Xbox 360 and it is just terrible. I love how the slightest touch of the joystick will put your car into a Scandanavian Flick and throw you off the road. Needless to say, I deleted it and wont be buying. Forza3 FTW.

25

a demo probably won't help sales. It doesn't matter what your settings are, it still sucks!

26

So much potential to be an entertaining game (not a sim) and it's ruined by poor performance and absolutely horrid handling/steering controls. Unless SHIFT gets patched again ASAP this one will be going into the garbage. I would've rather waited a few more months to get a product that was properly tested and finished rather than what they gave us.

Honestly, can you guys believe how bad the steering inputs are? I can't figure out if they were playing a big joke on us or if they really didn't find anything wrong with them. (This goes for both PC and the 360 versions.)

27

Those pictures are awesome!

28

LOL at the performance/handling "issues": if you don't know how to use a comp or controller go read a book :)

29

The game is really great. I like it it has rough edges but with proper patches it will live long on my pc. I hope there will be a DLC of some sort with car packs. Keep up the good work. Love to do rounds in Green hell with G25. And for Christ sakes don't judge the game for the first 5 minutes of play. And if I have to choose I will keep Shift and GT5 FTW.

30

I agree with Jono9981, control ruins the entire game...

31

I'm having the same problems with the stupid steering lag. I can understand that after awhile of playing the game you might not notice it anymore, but its there! Try playing a games like GT5 Prologue, Live For Speed and Forza, and your blown away by how awful the cars steer in Shift. And don't get me started on the drifting... I do like playing this game, but now matter how much I change the settings on the car, its still a little off.

32

Physics are complete garbage in this game.

33

hey what do you mean by carbon spooge cause i like to know

34

Its difficult to compare games like LFS with GT5 , Shift and Forza. The physics in LFS are the most accurate are ever seen and drove in a game. Shift, GT5 and Forza a in the middle between arcade / sim.

Live for speed is another planet and as you know its not an mainstream game. GT5 and Forza are going to be colossal blockbusters and they relay mostly on mainstream gamers. So they must be arcade but look real and convincing enough. I liked Shift and I liked it really much. I prefer GT over forza dunno why I ve played forza 1/2 and cannot forget the plastic look of the cars. For GT I cannot forget the dumb ai and the class system that with it you can beat the game for 5 races. Shift for me is a fresh air. I hope there will be Shift 2. I am mostly a PC gamer and the modding scene is making it really easy for me. I tried the REAL MOD for shift and I can say that its getting really close to the handling in GTR so it will be another busy weekend for my G25. Keep up the good work guys at SMS and let the patches and DLC roll. Just take a look at the guys from the modding scene you can learn a bit from them .... just a little :P

35

Forza 3 demo trumps this entire game.

36

Sqwall, well said.

Shift to me, is still a freakin arcade, I'm stunned at how they boasted about how 'realistic' the game would be.

37

I'm going to wager the majority of people in this comment thread are playing the game with a console controller, which renders most of the above comments about 'realism' useless. Either you're in arcade mode, or you're trying to play in 'pro' mode with a controller = you fail. Go get a G25 and play it in pro mode. Blah blah blah it's not GT5 but its definitely not 'crap' and I love how people complain about understeer or locking up brakes like its a bug in the game... *sigh*

The bounce bug is annoying but not game-ending. I'm thinking a lot of people thought they were a lot better drivers than they actually are haha. GT5 is VERY arcadey when played with a controller so if that or Forza is your benchmark for 'realism' - you've got miles to go mate. Go play Live For Speed or RFactor with a wheel, then play shift with all the nannies off. You'll change your tune.

38

Any game that has to implement alternate physics to implement a 'drift mode' is laughable. Selection of tire compounds, suspension tuning, and good driving skills should be all it takes to successfully maneuver an FR automobile sideways through corners. This game is not worth the $6.99 rental fee.

39

besides most of all mentioned (plus opening up ebisu to drift lapping) the controls are set to 33% dead zone from the shipped full version. totally terrible, i set it to 1% as well as all other dead zones and decrease the sensitivity a lot on all control settings just to even play the game.

40

What Chris said !

Thanks SMS loving this game single player, Multiplayer not so much, option to force off aids online?

NM just give me DLC Tracks ! Suzuka and Road Atlanta come to mind

41

The more i see pics of Shift, the more i realize how much i want Gran Turismo 5.

42

Why is there no TOYOTA SUPRA in the game? You guys put in the Skylines and Silvias but no Supra? I am truly truly disappointed. -1 =(

43

I like how all the hardcore race gamers act like this is a good game which is laughable. I wanted to like this game. I actually slide cars and spend a lot of time at the track. This game makes drifting harder than it is in real life SERIOUSLY. I talked with a lot of the guys i slide and grip with and we all agree that this is a ARCADE style game that is twice as frustrating as a sim or real life driving. Games are supposed to be fun especially an arcade style game that is supposed to pertain to the masses hence arcade "pure entertainment". There are good parts, visuals, tracks, and cars other than that IDK

44

oh god they got the xanavi GTR kit and fender flares!!!

45

No Supra, but I still bought your game. Things I don't like. Not having the ability to save the game midway. I have to either run the stupid race or turn off my console Who's stupid idea was that? Not having the ability to configure the controller to my liking. You only give 3 pre-sets, which I don't care for any of them. I do like the different views, very detailed. Sounds of the cars very realistic. The tracks are beautiful. I love the Canyon race. Still very bummed no Supra, but this game has my attention currently.

46

Love the game on PS3, Cool to see the Speedhunters add in the game!

Good cars! loads of bmw's (which I like)

Now I only have to find a little more time to play the game! LOL

47

They left out all the good drift tracks even irwindale isnt there

48

i think the game is a bit easy. and the drifting is hard to get use to. but over all its fun. i love my Zonda R

49

Since the Hakosuka comment page is full, I'll leave my comment on this page. Love the Hakosuka! Finally, some old school J-Tin to balance out the Ford, Chevy and Mopar stuff! BTW, an RSI bug would be a nice addition too!
