Motorshow>> Tokyo Motorshow 2009 – The Ft-86

You are looking at what is without a doubt the most important car to be exhibited at this year's Tokyo Motorshow. Forget the green eco car theme, this is precisely what the world has been waiting to see from a Japanese manufacturer. The FT-86 perfectly represents a market sector which has practically vanished in the last decade, that of the affordable Japanese sports car. The 80's and 90's in Japan were the hay day of such cars, starting off with the legendary AE86 where the Toyota concept supposedly draws its lineage from. It's a "back-to-basics" kind of car; a simple lightweight 2+2 coupe with a front mounted 4-cylinder engine driving the rear wheels via a manual transmission. Toyota is probably realizing that ignoring its loyal customers that still drive around in AE86s, MR-2s, Celicas and Supras was not a smart move, and the FT-86 is the key to winning back much needed respect from such enthusiasts.

The collaboration with Subaru, Toyota owns around 20% of Fuji Heavy Industries, begins up front with the flat-4 2L motor that will power the production version of the FT-86 when it will eventually hit dealerships across Japan late next year. The boxer engine allows for a low center of gravity, something Toyota is shooting for to achieve a well-balanced car. The naturally aspirated EJ20 used across the Subaru Legacy/Impreza/Exiga line-up develops 150 HP, but for the FT-86 it will be tuned to push out anywhere from 180 to 200 HP. If Toyota can keep curb weight at around 1250 kg, the same as a JDM Civic Type-R, the FT-86 will be a hoot to drive.

The rear end is somewhat anonymous and simply styled but I'm already picturing it with a big GT-wing! The Japanese tuners will no doubt go crazy with this car!

Toyota probably realized it was on to a winner by the amount of people that were constantly around the FT-86 display area. Curiously enough however, there was no mention of the Toyota-Subaru collaboration on this project, something Subaru must not be too happy with.

Simplicity if the key with the FT-86's design. From this angle you get a nice view of the rear carbon diffuser, but don't be fooled as something like this would never make it on the final production car, which should cost upwards of $25,000.

The FT-86's interior, much like the overall project, leans towards simplicity with a basic yet functional layout.

The dashboard does away with pointless futuristic displays and gadgets helping the driver to stay focused on driving and it's just so refreshing to see a manual gear lever and a clutch pedal in a concept car! Curiously enough the thin slot for the CD/DVD player on the dash can be closed by a zipper, which seems to be quite a theme around the cabin with red zippers appearing next to each of the four main air vents as well as on the seats.

The rear seat space is a little confined but more than acceptable for a car of these dimensions. Sitting behind the wheel revealed a nice driving position with the leather bucket seat sitting nice and low.

All the various controls are smartly arranged around the main dash area meaning the driver never needs to move his hands far from the steering wheel…

…the ones for the A/C on the left and the ones for the lap timer on the right. I liked the LCD screen in the center of the main instrumentation, something that will probably display everything from engine parameters to the navigation maps. Would be cool to see at least some of these details make it to the final production car.

The edgy design makes it look like no other car out there.

You really don't get the idea of just how compact the FT-86 is from pictures. It is 163.78 inches (4160 mm) long, 69.29 inches (1760 mm) wide and 48.19 inches (1260 mm) tall with a wheelbase of 101.18 inches (2570 mm). This makes it more compact than a 370Z for example (even if the Z has a shorter wheelbase), and a little bigger than an S2000.

Is it me or is that roofline and A-pillar 100% Nissan GT-R? The FT hachiroku concept was designed by Toyota's European Design Development studio (ED2) in Nice, France and takes a lot of inspiration from the 2007 FT-HS concept that was shown at the Detroit show.

The car won't change much aesthetically but you can expect those 19-inch wheels to be somewhat smaller for production. Would be nice to see 17-inch up front and 18-inch at the rear.

Toyota is on to a winner with this car, and I'm hoping it will be a wake up call for other Japanese manufacturers. As you recall Subaru is thinking on releasing its own version of the FT-86, and maybe Nissan will take notice and bring back the Silvia! These are the cars that will potentially get younger people to enjoy sports cars again, not to mention fuel the next wave of drift cars. I can't wait to get behind the wheel of the production version of the FT-86, be it a Celica or a Corolla or whatever it will end up being called!

Nice write up!! i love this car and every thing about it!!!

2

awesome, im getting hyped for this car too haha

3

The side profiles, all cars look GT-R-ish to me, for some reason. Still, I'm thrilled as FUCK for this car. (Sorry Speedhunters for the language, but I'm sure everyone else would say the same, haha)

4

Haha nice edit :P ^

I'm looking forward to this car getting into production asap!

5

Give me a desktop for my new car :D

6

Looks REAL nice Dino, cant wait to put a 2JZ in it and slide it lol. 2.0 NA Boxer engine :( . . . .

7

Out standing.

8

i agree with Absolution, just take a quick look at the front an side windows and compare with a GT-R, its almost the same, its like one window in one GTR design, i like the front view of this car, those headlights are awesome.

9

I <3 Akio Toyoda.

10

I can't help but to picture all the potential this car has (be it Super GT, drift, time attack, et al.). Speaking of which, I expect to see a Super GT rendering of this car from guys like Jon Sibal real soon (please?). I can't wait to see the production version; though I hope there aren't too many compromises.

11

Let me be the first to show it tuned.

Chopped it to change the line from the chin to the fender and lowered with wing..

FT-Xtreme 86

new release TWS RS200 Black Racing 19" rims.

Russ.

13

Haha, I didn't edit, it was just omitted.

14

Now if I can only talk my wife into how much WE need this FT-86 in our garage...

15

anyone noticed that there's no glove compartment and no cup holders?

now where is the drifter wanna-be gonna place his coffee cup... lol.

anyway, love this car to bits and i hope that once it arrives in Malaysia, it won't cost too much. damn the taxing government...

16

all i know is i am going to buy one of these. i told my self i will never buy a new car but i can change that for this car.

im in for some desktop pictures of this car

17

I think everyone that is excited about this car should thank Hyundai for bringing out the successful Genesis coupe. That is the car that took a chance in this segment and succeeded and will allow others to follow like this car from Toyota.

19

Still to big. It should be as small as an mx-5. :(

20

Great photos and great write up, but let me say this...

While I love the idea of Toyota building RWD "Fun" cars again, I am just not feeling this one.

Hopefully that will change with the production car rolls around and I see it in person.

21

Hopefully it will share a lot of subaru bits for suspension travel and you can fit 15" wheels over the brakes for gravel tires.

22

I doubt that Subaru will release its own version of the car. If it ain't AWD, it ain't Subaru! Unless they're making an AWD version, which is unlikely because I think Toyota would not let that happen.

23

Chops look great Russ. I'd have to take mine in white with some nice CE28Ns hihi

24

Bah! No GT-wings. This baby needs a TRD whale tail on that trunk. I love the tail lights. Looks to me like AE86 Redlines! I don't know if a few overlooked this but they stated it's a little bigger than an S2000 and seats 4....so it's not that big. AND it's a boxer engine! Don't like the NA? How about you find a crashed STI and bolt in 300+hp of smog exempt happiness?

25

This will definitely take away the bad taste left by the Prius and other anti-sports cars Toyota has made recently! When you say hit dealerships next year do you mean 2010 :O or 2011? Can't be soon enough haha even if it the production version not as lavish as the concept, I think they've nailed it!

No mention of Subaru? Well this is a Toyota concept after all. Even with a Subaru based engine (still no engine bay shots to confirm?) it will most likely have a T on it, not a bunch of stars. As it's reported to make 200hp NA it will no doubt be tweeked by TRD not STI (the latter would use a turbo version no doubt)

KIBS Toyota has made AWD Corolla's before (Tercel) and you can get an AWD Avensus today. More utility oriented but Toyota has rich 4WD heritage from the LandCruiser to Celica GT4 and Corolla WRC. And if there is a AWD version of the FT-86, could we see a long awaited return to WRC for Toyota...

26

Forget waiting for the US release, I'm buying one from Japan as soon as it comes out there. (Im assuming it will launch in Japan first)

PS It more like a baby LF-A designwise, than a GTR

27

Yes yes yes yes yes!

28

Tell us when Veilside has a nose assembly for this car to make it look presentable. This is going to be a bigger challenge for them than the Mark 3 MR2, but they managed to turn that one from ugly duckling into beautiful swan. Hopefully they will be up to the task for this challenge.

29

Everything is good minus the engine.........

What kind of diff in this thing?

30

I couldn´t have said it better. You said it all when you said this car is the most important car on Tokyo this year. We´ve been waiting for Toyota to wake up and get back on the sports car business. And it is great to see a simple, rear wheel drive, affordable and MANUAL TRANSMISSION car being reborn. I hope it goes into production and not just die like so many cool concepts in the past.

31

I love this car! Hopefully it'll be cheapish! Any chance of bringing back the MR2 soon!? lol

32

i don't think Toyota will have a full WRC program as long as they're in F1. TTE quit doing WRC and Le Mans so they could do the F1 program. It'll be a sweet idea to start it back up to lure Kimi Rakkinen to the team. This car would pretty sweet for the S2000 class, if they can get the weight to the minimums and have the suspension travel to compete.

33

"...like a GT-R".....umm....dunno if anyone's been noticing, but theres a common thread going on in design right now, especially the front end. Look at Scion tC/GT-R/Nissan 350Z/370Z/Mitubishi Evo X/Acura NSX/Lexus LFA/Audi R-8/R-4, and many many more....

But I'd say this car looks really good, and very fun to drive. Can't wait to see 'em tuned!

34

omigod iwantone

35

Ok, still doesn't feel like up to the name of the legendary Hachiroku, but I have to admit that this car is way cool! And I think I'm getting what Toyota intended to do: not updating the old 86 to modern standards of design and technology, but to create a whole new reincarnation of it! A lot different, yet the essence is there.... Interesting and good if not great actually, the argument for using a flat 4 engine. Now if this car would be at least as fun and agile to drive as the old Hachiroku, then they really made it to reincarnate the Legend of the Hachiroku and we'll have a brand new flavour to that legend!

To rap up, Nissan... bro... please bring back the Silvia's and the rest of the drifting bunch:((( And Toyota, please do thing of a brand new Soarer...

36

I have to say I quite enjoyed reading and seeing this article. This concept looks great, although I wish they could stretch the rear-side window so it doesn't have that Nissan GT-R look, and get closer to the original AE86's lines. With a couple of changes here and there it could be a pretty damn nice ride.

I can't wait to see a panda FT-86!

37

YOOO ((RE-Xtreme aka GT-Roadster aka Russ)) My version is best what u think:p u inspired me, waht u think guys??

38

"The edgy design makes it look like no other car out there."

Whaat?? My biggest dissapointment is that this looks like yet another 350/70z-genesis-skyline-etc etc etc or a mixture of them. Nothing incredibly original about the design....

39

This car looks so awesome. Still hate the pos Subaru engine under the bonnet.

40

I did this chop when the first pictures came out ^_^

41

gueask

Your Red car looks good. Miesters or SSR would look cool.

Speed devil.

your watanabe's look really fake. But the concept is cool.

I was trying to keep mine modern.

I don't think the car looks like a retro AE86 at all.

There is a side by side comparo in one of the Japanese magazines today.

Subaru looks like it will be significanty the better option.

42

Cant wait to see one in the flesh,/drive, and see what aftermarket comes out for them :)

43

yeah i agree wiht you watanabes looks i dont know its not tha style for that car tanks man hope u like it.

44

What is funny is that when you look at the russian keyboard, english "F" and "T" keys also have russian "A" and "E" on them! So if you type FT-86 without switching to english the it it will make AE-86 in the text.

45

i love the car but i love the comment at the in about nissan getting the picture and starting on a new silvia

46

what ever it is,what i want is

1.keep this car massed produce..i hate it when car makers keep telling its a limited one like the LF-A..just like the supra,ae86...mass produce...

2.why not the boxer N/a ENGINE mated with individual throttle body..i like it when yamaha was the one involve in LF-A engine design.

3.important thing is to price this car and made it affordable to just about everyone.

47

i cant wait for this new age 86! im saving up!

48

The only prob I have with this car is price. If it were <$20,000 it would really be something. Still, really excited about the tuning possibilities for this car and what the competition (i.e. Nissan, Honda, Suzuki?, Mitsubishi?) comes up with. Surely the Genesis, this car, and the Subaru version will bring about the re-vitalization of the affordable RWD coupe segment.
