Random Snap>>mx-5 Superlight Concept

With fall fast approaching, that means it's time to once again start looking towards the auto show season and the concept cars that come with it. One of the concepts that's already been revealed is the Mazda MX-5 superlight concept for the Frankfurt Show. As it's name suggests, this car takes the standard MX-5 and strips away "excess" weight , doing away with things like a windshield or top. The resulting car is a unique creation that's one my favorite concept cars in recent memory – the raw spirit of the MX-5 turned up to eleven.

Hopefully it comes with a pair of leather driving gloves and some goggles…

Beautiful car. If only more people knew of the mx-5's potential

It's nice, but it's a redo of the 1999 Miata Mono Posto on a 2009/2010 body. How did you miss this? The Mono Posto was part of the 2009 display at the International Motor Show in the Miata retrospect display, along with the 1989 Debut Car, the 1989 Miata Club Sport, 1995 Miata M Sport Speedster, 1996 M Coupe, and Mazdaspeed MX-5 Cup.

Thankfully they don't and I can still get my parts cheap and plenty.

4

I dunno. WIthout a windshield it just looks...wrong somehow.

5

Haha whoa, speed racer =D

7

4pots in the rear?

9

You wouldn't want to drive that on the road in Australia, can anyone say Kangaroo pattern race helmet lol.

10

whats with the extra grey aesthetic bits in the front bumper? superlight?? looks like they're not trying hard enough!

Big brakes, less weight, same chassis dynamics but with a lower centre of gravity?

Where do i sign? :)

Sub-1000kg is pretty shit hot when you look around at the current curb weights. Without spending a fortune on light weight panels, etc i think they have done an excellent job. Think about what they have had to do and what they have had to include in this car, yet it's still alot lighter. Mazda know how to build a car :)

I would buy this if it came out absolutely no quesiton.

my dad's 93 LE weighs the same and it's fully loaded and handles great and with a few tweeks could be comparably quick. all mazda did was look at some pics online of weekend racers and trackday miatas and thought "if they can strip them bare and make them light. why can't we?" so they removed the windshield. what's so great about that? why not leave the windshield and make it a daily driver/weekend track car? i think if all these car manufacturers would look back at chassis from 20 or 30 years ago with more modern drivetrain components and slightly updated interiors they'd be moving in the right direction. look at porsche, lotus, aston... what do they have in common? they've simply improved on a good design year after year. sure they release other stuff here and there, but otherwise they just make something good better. cars have gotten so much larger and more complicated for what? comfort? ease of driving? you want something comfortable? buy a luxury sedan. you want something easy to drive? ride a bicycle, or take a driving course and learn how to actually drive a sports car. ... i could rant for pages...

i should add that i agree that the idea behind this concept is great. "the raw spirit of the MX-5 turned up to eleven" is a great way to put it. and yes i realize concepts are supposed to be a lil beyond reality, but c'mon if you're gonna say that, why not make it a single like the mono posto that oyaji gaijin mentioned? http://www.carstyling.ru/resources/concept/2000_Mazda_Miata_Mono-Posto_05.jpg

i think they just slightly missed the perfect execution with this one.

if this is a miata at 11... then what is this? http://www.triplezoom.com/news/uploads/miata_r_750.jpg

Looks much like the SLR Mclaren Stirling Moss design to me.
