Event>> Sema 2008: Outside Car Show

The first thing you see upon arrival to the SEMA show at the Las Vegas Convention Center is a rather large and diverse collection of customized, modified and competition cars. Today, I spent a bit of time wandering about with the NFS team’s trusty Canon digital SLR camera to give you a feel for the variety of machines on show.

I just love the juxtaposition between the different car tribes. In the foreground, you have a beautiful traditional custom 1939 Packard sedan, while in the background sits a mildly tuned VW GTi.

I’m not sure what exact style to call this Impala. Lowrider? Custom? Pro Touring? All of the above?

It was sitting on a set of dubs… looks like a pretty high budget build to me.

A bit further down the line is this stunning 1960 Ford Starliner.  It’s done in a period perfect, early 1960’s custom style…

I am feeling the chrome steelies…

Tail-dragger… great detailing on the exhausts…

Look at the patterning on the paint, not to mention the fade work…amazing artistry.

Bumped into Tanner Foust so I thought I’d take a portrait shot. Good luck in Long Beach Tanner!

I’m not 100% familiar with the background on this S2000. Looks like a Time Attack car… note the painted-on headlights.

Are we to expect this car at the Superlap Battle next week?

A great example of a “Cartoon Rod“. Does this car even fit into a lane of traffic? Look how wide it is.

Perhaps this hot rod doesn’t get the best fuel mileage, Hahaha. Imagine the noise this car makes…it must scare small children.

Ok… so it isn’t very fashionable to pay much attention to 300Cs these days, but this example did catch my eye. …

err…. Hmmm….

I last saw this Mustang trying to qualify at the New Jersey Formula Drift event earlier this year.

It did look pretty nice, glinting in the sunlight…

I think you can tell I have an eye for traditional customs and rods no? Or perhaps I have more to say about these cars.

This was a great example of a 1950 Mercury lead sled.

I like the effect of the glossy flames offset against the satin black paint.

Perfection…

For me, this is a dream car.

The next car in the line-up was this Rat Rod, which Antonio highlighted this morning. I’ll be looking at this car in more detail in a later post…

This is the start of a new trend? WTCC-style perhaps? Looks like a street legal race car to me.

Looming in one of the entrance halls was this crazy looking offroader. Although this is outside of the Speedhunters viewpoint, it is worth mentioning that the whole off road aftermarket scene is quite heavily represented at SEMA. Normally I don’t pay much attention to these types of cars, but I couldn’t help but notice this mad machine.

BTW I’m flying back to Vancouver tomorrow, but I’ll try and squeeze in one more pass of photos from the show floor before I head out to the airport.

Best,

:Rod

Im absolutely with you on that Mercury. Perfection indeed.

Could the S2000 be the J's Racing S2000 time attack car, anyone know if J's Racing have sold it? It had exactly the same body bits and painted headlights. Same yellow color as well, and those might be J's Racing stickers on the door, can't see them properly.

4

Totally agree on the Merc, What caught my eye was the subtle pinstriping on the wheels. And that starliner...man talk about amazing detail.

5

Someone PLEASE give Doug Van Den Brink a full ride.

PLEASE!

That Starliner is INCREDIBLE!! Such amazing detail, such fine lines! I love early '60s customs. If you've ever seen them, even bone stock cars from this period had such amazing detail, look at the stainless trim in the interior of a '63 Riviera for example.

7

yes, that's ths J's Racing s2k, recently sold to a lucky owner/shop in NorCal.

8

That yellow J's Racing S2000 WAS purchased by N1Concept (located in San Francisco) from J's Racing in Japan. It's the genuine (old) time attack with new graphics.

10

yes it j's racing time attack car that they used in past for the super lap battle and sold it to a company in the us and they just put their vinyl on it and now they are trying to get reputation for buying a car from a high end tuner in japan.

12

....another note I wanted to make was: That J's Racing S2000 already been to Willow Spring last year for time attack.

Umemoto san (the honcho of J's Racing) got helped setup the car by Robert Walker (aka maxrev) and the crew of AJ Racing in Canada.

13

I read somewhere that N1 Concept was the US Distributor for J's Racing and that it is the original time attack from J's with like Alex said new graphics and a few other updates.

That Ford Starliner is my coworker's car. If you want to see more come by Pleasanton, CA. I'll give you a personal tour.

The S2000 is the renown J's Racing Time Attack S2000. J's and N1 Concepts are working together to build a stronger presence for J's Racing here in the US w/ this car. The graphics were courtesy of J's Racing and Art Factory Graphics of Japan.

The car did well beyond what we expected at Super Lap Battle in Buttonwillow for the little amount of time we had to track and driver prep. Be on the lookout for more good things to come.
