Event>> Muscle & Hot Rods At Donut Derelicts

Last night, my friends and I met up at the Grand Star Jazz Club in Downtown LA's Chinatown to groove to old school reggae dancehall, funky soul, and hip hop beats at Firecracker, a super packed function where a friend of the Speedhunters, DJ King Wo (along with one of my favorite hip hop DJs, the Bay Area's own DJ Shortkut), was spinning. The reason I mention this – King Wo worked with us to shoot footage for our Birth of Pro Street documentary film project we did last year, which featured professional motorsports drivers that had a background in illegal street racing.

Since we didn't get out of there until something like 3:00am, we decided to meet up with a couple of our other automotive industry friends, and head to Donut Derelicts, a long-running muscle car and hot rod meet in Orange County's Huntington Beach area. I know, I know… you might be wondering, "who on earth goes to a car meet at 3AM?" I know it sounds crazy, especially since we don't normally get home until 5:00am on nights that we go out in LA or Hollywood. It's just that we've been hearing about Donut Derelicts for quite some time, but never actually had the chance to crawl out of bed early enough to check it out.

We arrived at the Donut Derelicts parking lot at around 6:00am, and it was already super packed! The meet was already in progress! My friends and I were stunned! These guys all looked like they had been there for quite a while! That's just crazy! However, I get the feeling that it's no problem for regulars, since most of the Donut Derelicts showgoers probably go to bed early anyway. We were amazed at how many nice, shining examples of classic Fords, Chevys, Cadillacs, and other makes were around. There were tons of cars here!

This 1967 Camaro SS looks so gorgeous and so intimidating! I love mean looking cars!

Awesome. This is an early 1960s Ford Falcon, and it's for sale for $32K USD. Look at the fat tires on the splined rear wheels! I love how the rear wheels look! Not a big fan of aluminum racing seats though.

This rat rod looked pretty cool… I don't know too much about hot rods and rat rods, but it certainly looked interesting.

There were alot of very clean examples of old school classics all over the place! Check out the paint on this one!

This Camaro looked like it was ready to hit the dragstrip! Check out the Moroso kill switch located right next to the taillights.

This 1962 Lincoln Continental with suicide-doors was on sale!!! Only $9000! Damn, someone give me 9 grand so I can buy it – I can totally imagine myself cruising the boulevard in this thing, with a six-pack of models packed in there with me.

Check out this guy's old school Orange County International Raceway shirt! Very cool, but unfortunately, OCIR closed down years ago.

Here's some Chevy love for ya.

Any old school Mopar fans over here? This is a 1964 Plymouth Savoy, with a hemi engine and American Racing Torque Thrust wheels.

Yellow deep dish wheels with chrome beauty rings make this otherwise low key car stand out. One thing I noticed too, is that alot of these muscle car guys run old school tires. When I say old school tires, I mean… some are "period correct" replicas of vintage tire types, and some of them are just plain cracked up, brittle old tires.

Check out the old school BF Goodrich Euro TA tires on this hot rod. I used to have a set of these – over 10 years ago. My set of Euro TAs were second hand; they came on a set of used wheels I bought. They were horrible! They were old and brittle, and didn't provide any sort of grip at all… but I guess you need to run period correct tires on these old cars.

A true period correct rat rod or 1967 Camaro would certainly look ridiculous rocking some new school Nitto Invo or Advan AO32R tires or something, don't you agree? I asked our resident hot rod lover on Speedhunters, Rod Chong (aka "The Rodfather"), and he thinks a good choice of tire for a hot rod like this would be the bias ply 1950s tire replicas made by Coker tire. That is, if the car owner cares about being period correct.

Love the Plymouth, I'm a die hard Mopar nut! Probably started from watching the Dukes of Hazzard when I was a kid. Also a big fan of the traditional/ratrod scene and glad it's been getting more coverage recently. Wish I had 9k for that Lincoln though! Around here you'd see it going for more like $25,000.

Wow $25K?! That's a ton of cash, but I'm sure it's super worth it for a super clean Continental. Damn, I want one too!!!! My friend Jerry is a 30 yr old Chinese guy and has 2 of them.. a black sedan like the one in the Matrix, and a light blue convertible... they both look sooo awesome and it's kind of funny to see a skinny young Chinese guy driving them! haha

...earliest morning ever (or latest nite ever...). but well worth it.

That all nighter totally messed me up for the rest of my trip...now I'm back in T.O. and have major jetlag! Well, being in Vegas for a week didn't help with the sleep pattern either. LOL. That was fun, man I wanna go back to LA!
